STORIES ABOUT OUR ANCESTORS
NOTES OF INTEREST ABOUT WILLIAM JOHN MAYO ~ GRANDMA NORA'S FATHER ~

The following stories were related by a cousin Margaret (MAYO) Mizzelle of Williamston, North Carolina:

A dog by the name of "Curfew" was given to Aunt Sissie(REBECCA_GRANDMA"S SISTER) and
our Great Grandmother Katie.  In the beginning, Grandpa John didn't like the dog.  Curfew, on the other hand, loved Grandpa, right from the start!
Curfew would follow Grandpa around everywhere he went.  Pretty soon, Grandpa and Curfew became inseparable friends.  Curfew was a smart little dog and soon proved to be a handy worker around the farm.  When the chickens would get in the garden, Grandpa would tell the dog, "Go get 'um Curfew!"  Curfew would immediately chase the chickens out of the garden.  When Grandpa wanted to hitch the mules up to the plow, he would tell Curfew, "Go get the mules."
The little dog would go to the pasture and herd the mules up to the barn.
Grandpa also had a pony and buggy.  On occasion,  when he would have a few drinks,  he would hitch up
the buggy and take a ride.

Walter Harrell (83) years old, said that he could remember how Grandpa John would sit on the porch
and eagerly await the arrival of his grandchildren when they were expected for a visit.
